With its ultra-dynamic proportions, elegantly sporty lines, low-slung silhouette and innovative design features, the BMW i8 represents a new generation of sports car. Bringing together hallmark features of the BMW brand with the design language developed specially for BMW i cars creates a progressive aesthetic which faithfully communicates the performance attributes, efficiency and innovative premium character of the plug-in hybrid sports car.
The launch of the BMW i8 sees the world’s first sports car to be purpose-built with sustainability in mind complete its journey from vision to reality.
The new BMW Vision Future Luxury looks as elegant and luxurious as one may expects it to be in the near future. And, yes, it is a brilliant, much more sophisticated (for technology) development of the 2013 BMW Gran Lusso Coupé jointly designed and developed by BMW and Pininfarina.
Yet, its most fascinating features are in the innovative lightweight engineering approach to the bodywork and its consequent developments. The approach is based on the extensive use of carbon fibre and complementary materials, to dramatically cut the weight of traditional seats by integrating them in the bearing structure thus making them a structural part rather than something the traditional structure has to carry.
The idea is not new but it has never been applied to volume production. The innovation is more a matter of production technology with consequent design and engineering concepts banking on the potential of the new approach.
Nothing in China is easy to understand for a western.
Or at least for one western: me.
However one brand name is easy to understand: FAW, the acronym of First Auto Works.
The first, official, car factory established by the Chinese government in Changchun, Jilin, back in 1953.
Its first accomplishment was indeed the 1958 Hong Qi, Chinese for Red Flag.
Ever since, through ups and down, the Hong Qi has been the truly Chinese automobile. In its first years and decade, when Chinese mobility relied on bicycles, the few Hong Qi that the FAW car company could produce, were the hunting reserve of the high-rank leaders of the ruling party and few state dignitaries.
They have been “for governments only” so far but now, and here is the big news for 2014, the company can sell them to any buyer.
WARD'S TOP TEN INTERIORS WINNERS
The editors of the authoritative North American Ward’s magazine have voted the Interior of the new generation Jeep Cherokee as the winner for their 2014 much coveted award.
Ward’s is celebrated world-wide for their Top Ten Engines of the Year and Top Ten Best Interiors nominations and award.
The Jeep Cherokee Limited has topped the favour of the jury and, according to editor Tom Murphy, that is because «it is a well-equipped CUV with an interior that is upscale, boldly styled, comfortable and, yes, rugged and its fetching interior is pleasant on-road demeanour and available trail-ready drivetrain.
It is called Peugeot 2008 DKR (for Dakar) and it positively it is an SUV just like the regular production Peugeot 2008.
However, its design is radically different and its SUV definition should be given a different meaning where sport is replaced by racing. Its mission is also quite different from the one of the mass production Peugeot 2008.
The Peugeot 2008 DKR has been born with one single aim: win the 2015 DAKAR in Argentina and – on its way to and from Argentina – win the Oscar for the best promotional and advertising tool on behalf of Peugeot and its lead partners: Red Bull and Total. Just as the Peugeot 208 T 16 Pikes Peak did last year, when it smashed the hill climb race record, setting a hard to beat 8m13.878s time and made the cover and pages of any thousand of virtual and physical publications.
The first Ford Mustang was officially born on April 17th, 1964 according to the carmaker, from a product concept clearly defined by Lee Iacocca.
It was an instance success as the affordable sports car the young generation could afford and soon became the icon of the 1960ies American Dream.
The stunning success steered the marketing and sales "experts" at Ford towards bigger and heavier developments and the designers were asked to play it safer and safer.
The following generations somehow betrayed the original «simple» concept and the myth fades away.
However, the Mustang nameplate has remained strong and is still exciting the desire of car enthusiasts. The new generation launched today with the limited series 50th Anniversary Edition has all it needs to pay homage to the founder of the dynasty.
Separately we will look at the Italdesign 2007 Ford Mustang that represent one of the purest interepretation of the orginal Mustang concept and design, with a very amateurish and spontaneous interview on video.
Here below we recap the 50 history of the Ford Mustang and in our Photo Gallery we offer you a first set of images. The gallery will be further extended in the next few days.
