Car Design News has honoured the achievements of Marcello Gandini, through more than 50 years of activity, recently at a ceremony in Geneva on the eve of the 2014 motor show.
Jury member were authoritative professionals by the name of Laurens van den Acker, VP design for Renault, Moray Callum, VP design at Ford, Sooshin Choi, professor at leading design school CCS, Richard Chung, VP industrial design at Johnson Controls, Gert Hildebrand, head of design for newcomer Qoros, Steve Mattin, design director at Lada, Gorden Wagener, VP design at Mercedes-Benz and Ed Welburn, VP of global design at GM.
Mr Gandini was honoured for his «outstanding contribution to car design that stretches back to the 1965 Lamborghini Miura» (actually completed and presented in early 1966, editor’s note, «as well as its Countach and Diablo successors.
His work also includes the Lancia Stratos Zero concept and the production Lancia Stratos HF, the Citroen BX, Fiat X1/9, BMW 5 Series, a series of Maseratis and the Renault Magnum truck amongst many others.»
«This great man's career spans over 50 years and his work includes some of the most seminal, visionary designs of all time,» said Car Design News editor Owen Ready. «He has proved an inspiration to generations of car designers and his work continues to influence the industry today.»
In an exclusive video interview played as the awards were announced on 4 March 2014 at Car Design Night Geneva, Gandini joked that in his focus on design “he forgot to have a career”, instead taking each project as it came.
