Through the past five years I have been running a blog dedicated to car design with an experimental approach. I was eager to establish a bridge with the design community and to gain experience on the web.

Now, time has come for a new project with broader goals, focuses and reach.

The goal is to establish a very lively «Café littéraire» where professional designers, design educators and students, car and design enthusiasts meet, show their ideas, discuss design matters and trends, contribute with their own reports and stories to the development of a modern design culture, with past experiences and inputs from different cultures.

Fiat-Panda-Cross Geneva-2014-01Ever since it was first launched, back in 1983, the Fiat Panda 4x4 has been a great market success in Italy and the nearby Alpine countries, France, Switzerland and Austria for its unique capabilities condensed into a small and light package. The great size/carrying capacity ratio, the big (for a small city car) wheels, the than very rare 4x4 transmission made it an instant success that never faded away.

The second generation designed by Bertone added size, roominess, height and style and the success is continue. The Fiat Panda range is granting the highest earning ratio to the brand.

Fiat believes it can do better, with the extra touch of style and image of the Panda Cross, positioned over the Panda 4x4 and the Panda Trekking.

The city-car-by-definition that farmers and gentlemen drive in the countryside is taking a colourful look that shows it further enhanced capabilities and ambitions.

To start with, the Panda Cross is fitted with oversized all-season 185/65R15 tyres, to grant more drivability and traction in low-traction situations while ensuring excellent on-road handling on both wet and dry surfaces.

Moving from the big 15’ five-spoke wheels, designers have restyled the bumpers, integrating fog light and adding entertaining LED DRLs into the skid plate, which is finished in a trendy satin titanium colour with big holes.

    With that goes, in consequent look the side mouldings with the ‘Cross’ logo and new roof bars also with a satin titanium finish. The rear end is also revised with a new bumper with under-body protection, echoing the design of the front skid plate, a new rear light cluster and a chrome tail pipe.  Finally, new tow hooks finished in brilliant red emphasise the off-road character and complete the look of the new Panda Cross.

    Under its made-up skin Fiat’s engineers are offering two upgraded engines. The entry version is powered by the 60 kW (80 HP) 1.3 turbo diesel four cylinder Multijet II, whereas the smaller 0.9 Twin Air Turbo petrol sit at the top with its 67 kW (90 HP) powerplant mated to a new 6-speed gearbox with a rather short first gear being added to the standard 5 gears. For greater off-road ability the Panda Cross comes with what Fiat calls “Torque-on-demand” transmission achieved with the use of the ESC combined with the derivative Electronic Locking Differential. A very low weight and market application of mechatronic.
