Yes, you can!

Through the past five years I have been running a blog dedicated to car design with an experimental approach. I was eager to establish a bridge with the design community and to gain experience on the web.

Now, time has come for a new project with broader goals, focuses and reach.

The goal is to establish a very lively «Café littéraire» where professional designers, design educators and students, car and design enthusiasts meet, show their ideas, discuss design matters and trends, contribute with their own reports and stories to the development of a modern design culture, with past experiences and inputs from different cultures.

JAGUAR-XE frame-1Jaguar will not wait for the Parisian "Mondial de l'Automobile" motor show (opening gates early next October) to officially unveil its trend setting Jaguar XE. The all-new mid-size sport sedan will make its world premiere in London on September 8th, according to a company statement.

According to Jaguar's officers their XE will be the first entry in the BMW 3 Series segment to feature «an aluminium-intensive monocoque, with lightweight aluminium accounting for 75 per cent of the structure». Its new body structure was first showcased at last year IAA in Frankfurt with the C-X17 SUV Concept.

The all-new modular architecture is the fifth generation of body structures developed by Jaguar applying its own bonded-and-riveted aluminium technology inspired by aerospace applications. The weight to stiffness ratio achieved «ensures that the XE is the most fuel-efficient Jaguar yet with fuel consumption and CO2 emissions on the NEDC combined cycle of over 75mpg and less than 100g/km respectively» claims the British maker.

“The Jaguar XE body uses over 75% aluminium content, which far exceeds any other car in its class. This gives us a body structure with unrivalled low weight: it’s light but also immensely strong with extremely high levels of torsional stiffness. We’ve made sure our aluminium-intensive body structure exceeds all global safety standards without compromising on vehicle design or refinement.” said Dr Mark White of Jaguar’s technical centre.

The Jaguar XE is also the first car in the world make use of a new grade of high strength aluminium called RC 5754 which has been developed specifically for the XE. This new alloy features a high level of recycled material and makes a significant contribution to Jaguar’s goal of using 75 per cent recycled material by 2020.

Another first for the new Jaguar is the Ingenium family of all-new lightweight, low-friction, low emission four-cylinder petrol and diesel 2.0 litre 4-cylinder engine built in the new Engine Manufacturing Facility that will supply both Jaguar and Land Rover.

The full engine line-up will enable Jaguar to offer vehicles with class-leading performance, with performance ranging from emissions lower than 100g of CO2 per km through top speeds of over 300km/h (186mph), stated the company.

The light but strong architecture incorporates highly advanced suspension systems delivering high levels of ride quality, handling and steering. Its powertrain will drive either rear wheels or all-wheels.

As for the look and style, Jaguar's head of design, director Ian Callum is committal. He says: «the new Jaguar XE is every bit a modern Jaguar; more compact in size but visually striking. Practical and yet premium.  We never forget we are designing a Jaguar and that means it must be as exciting to look at and drive as it is brilliant to run and practical to own. We believe we've done just that with the Jaguar XE." 

Production is expected to start late this year and reach global roll-out from mid-2015.
