Implementation of self-driving vehicles paves the way for an innovative approach to infrastructure design, for example by creating more space for pedestrians and cyclists by leading autonomous cars through a cost-efficient, small-dimension tunnel, according to says Erik Coelingh, Technical Specialist at Volvo Car Group.

The illustration below, one among a series proposed by Bjorn Siesjo, City Architect of Gothenburg, shows a narrow, ‘flyover’ which creates a smooth integration of the autonomous car.
